Canada eTA Requirements

There are a few basic requirements that each traveler must meet to obtain an eTA Canada. The first and most important one is to be a citizen of one of the visa-exempt countries. Travelers from these 54 destinations must apply for the Electronic Travel Authorization prior to their visit to Canada.

Thus, first, check if your country of citizenship is listed as one of the eligible ones allowing you to use the convenient eTA system.

Next, check if you have the following basics:

  • any working device (can be a phone, laptop, PC, or tablet)
  • an internet connection
  • an active email address (to receive the approved Canadian eTA)

Who needs an eTA for Canada?

The Canadian eTA - a form of authorizing travels to Canada was introduced in 2016 to speed up the process of screening incoming visitors to Canada to make sure every person entering the country will not pose any threat to the public.

Every person who wishes to enter Canada by air from any of the visa-exempt countries must apply for an eTA 3 business days ahead of their departure, this includes adults, children, and dependent adults.

However, in cases of applications for underage and dependent travelers, the responsibility to fill the form correctly lies on the parent, guardian, or caretaker.

Who Does Not Need an eTA to Canada?

There are some travelers for whom eTA is not listed as an entry requirement, and these are:

  • citizens of Canada
  • Canadian permanent residents
  • US citizens

Documents Required to Get a Canada eTA

Canada eTA requirements are elementary; thus, preparing to start the application process takes just a few minutes. Besides the staple requirements listed earlier, every traveler applying for an eTA to Canada must have one additional document:

  • a passport with a minimum validity of 6 months from the planned arrival in Canada
  • This document applies to every traveler despite their purpose of visit to Canada.

    Additional Canada eTA Requirements

Besides technical requirements, such as a working device or internet connection, or documents to prepare, like your valid passport, there are a few other requirements that every traveler must meet for their eTA Canada application to be processed.

The Canadian Government issues a valid eTA for travelers who:

    • have not been convicted for any serious or immigration-related crimes
    • can prove that they will come back to their home country (e.g., proving that they have a family in their home country, a job, or a home)
    • can prove that they have a sufficient amount of money for the planned stay in Canada
    • are in good health

The online application form contains questions on the above-listed details, as well as requires providing basic personal information, passport data, and travel-related details.

    Specific Requirements for Brazil Citizens

Citizens of Brazil must meet one additional requirement to be eligible to make an eTA application. If you plan on visiting Canada from Brazil, make sure that you have one of the following:

    • a Green Card to the US
    • a visa to Canada issued at any point within the last 10 years
    • a non-immigrant visa to the US

If you cannot prove that you have any of the above-listed documents and wish to apply for an eTA from Brazil, your application may be refused.

    Canada Entry Requirements

Apart from eTA, every visitor to Canada must prepare a few additional documents, including:

    • proof of being fully vaccinated
    • a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival
    • a completed ArriveCAN health declaration

The current entry requirements have been implemented because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Every visitor must meet them to get entry into Canada.
However, it's worth noting that the restrictions may differ for children, recovered travelers, and those who decide to arrive to Canada by boat.
